It is just a single constant that guards `gradle` invocation. See the linked PR. The reason for the check is, without it, you typically get a *terribly confusing* error from gradle itself if it isn't compatible. Historically, the java support has sometimes lagged a bit from dependencies such as gradle and eclipse ecj and other things. This does seem to have gotten a lot better recently.
