Tomoko Uchida commented on LUCENE-9855:
---------------------------------------

I know the definition of ANN (and an instance of that, HNSW) - just to wrap up
the long conversation here, we are seeking a sufficiently "general" but not too
ambiguous name for the vector format. We don't limit the usecases to
"approximate" search nor imply connections to any specific search algorithms
such as HNSW in the abstract codec layer; this will bring future flexibility to
possible search algorithms - exact or inexact, whatever else - that could be
implemented based on it, I believe.

> Reconsider names for ANN related format and APIs

> There is some discussion about the codec name for ann search.

> Main points here are 1) use plural form for consistency, and 2) use more
> specific name for ann search (second point could be optional).
> A few alternatives were proposed:
> - VectorsFormat
> - VectorValuesFormat
> - NeighborsFormat
> - DenseVectorsFormat
