I experimented locally with a quick hack patch for the followup issue
LUCENE-9796, and can confirm that fixing the API issue will expose all the
other slow stuff out there with similar problems (e.g. grouping)
I'll resolve this issue as it addresses the specific CheckIndex problem, but
the fixes to grouping and other slowness in tests should be fixed on that
followup issue as it is more involved.
