Mark Robert Miller commented on SOLR-14636:
-------------------------------------------

Yeah man, this is more art than science to get here. The only way it would be
kept with a larger group is tight policing and monitoring.

Anyway, the tests demonstrate superiority in a number of ways - For one, they
will be extremely solid and without bandaids instead very not solid with tons
of broken bandaids. Solid tests for a distributed system would alone guide me,
and these tests are professionals now. The tests also demonstrate that every
basic feature can run extremely fast. All the BS is taken out. That has
production consequences on multiple levels. I’m not going to sell it, it will
sell itself. They also demonstrate everything can be run quickly, even with all
the tests running together in parallel. Also on a single or dual core machine.
Etc etc. It’s night and day.

And as I once tried to explain, that’s not the exciting part. The exciting part
is that it’s a SolrCloud devs can build on - so many things are beneficial to
devs. The other devs are not building SolrCloud. I know a very small list.
That’s been the way forever. Yonik and I built SolrCloud and everyone is just
trying to make it work with hacks and more features. Well that sucks, and it’s
an embarrassment to me. So here’s something that a sky scraper can go on
instead of a shack.

> Provide a reference implementation for SolrCloud that is stable and fast.
