Sorry I was not clear. I meant we can fix this just in `maybeStall()` and
remove the change in `merge()`:
```
while (mergeThreadCount() >= maxMergeCount) {
if (mergeThreads.contains(Thread.currentThread())) {
// Individual comment...
return false;
}
if (mergeSource.hasPendingMerges() == false) {
// // Individual comment...
return false;
}
...
```
The additional check in `merge()` would no longer be needed.
