Review Comment:
   If spec is non-null, then schema cannot be null right? Otherwise, this could 
skip adding columns for a spec because the schema wasn't passed in as well.
   
   Rather than failing though, it may be easier to fall back to `spec.schema()` 
like the sort order code uses.
