Review Comment: There are several public APIs where the contract requires us to keep the current `overwrite(boolean)`. These APIs will be deprecated, but in 1.10 we still need to provide them. OTOH we are planning to use the new API internally in every case, so as a temporary measure we will provide `overwrite(boolean)`.
