To start with, it's a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4, 512Mb DDR ram.

Now the interesting but highly baffling bit... With direct rendering
disabled frame rate with glxgears running is:

glxgears
3548 frames in 5.0 seconds = 709.600 FPS
3287 frames in 5.0 seconds = 657.400 FPS
343 frames in 5.0 seconds = 68.600 FPS
348 frames in 5.0 seconds = 69.600 FPS
381 frames in 5.0 seconds = 76.200 FPS
3612 frames in 5.0 seconds = 722.400 FPS
3541 frames in 5.0 seconds = 708.200 FPS

You can see the full screen drop off.

With direct rendering running I get:

bash-2.05b$ glxgears
228 frames in 5.0 seconds = 45.600 FPS
175 frames in 5.0 seconds = 35.000 FPS
125 frames in 5.0 seconds = 25.000 FPS
93 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18.600 FPS
54 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10.800 FPS
51 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10.200 FPS
101 frames in 5.0 seconds = 20.200 FPS
126 frames in 5.0 seconds = 25.200 FPS

I appear to be getting less than 10% of the performance with direct
rendering than I do without.

So why such a big difference? I was expecting it to be higher and maybe a
little more constant with direct rendering on?
