I've been using SWIG 1.3.39 for Java bindings for a few months now, and
it's working fine.

PS. SWIG 1.3.39 is built and installed in ~warmerdam/gdal-swig on
www.gdal.org (aka xblade14). SWIG 1.3.36 is in /usr/local/bin.
