I'm sorry; I meant to write "Why was it decided to...?"

What strikes me as odd about this, moreover, is that the incompatibility
appears gratuitous; the extra whitespace doesn't help anything. Is this a case
of wanting to (eventually) use modern C features in the intermediate compiler?

More importantly, what is the support status for systems like the one in
question? Is it to build 3.4.x first, and then use that to build 4.x? Or is 4.x
not intended to support it at all, hacks notwithstanding?
