Hopefully GW-BASIC's open-sourcing will help a bit, although it was only a very early, 1.x version. Back in the day I wrote tons upon tons upon tons of code, and all of it in GW-BASIC until I found QBASIC (and had a machine with more than 256K RAM), QuickBasic, and eventually Turbo C.
