My personal opion is that packing the executables as part of the official distribution is a bad idea. If somebody needs to squeeze the last bit of space for some reason, they should be the one to do the EXE compression.
As I see it EXE packing just adds one additional layer of possible incompatiblity. With the maturity of most packers it's probably not a big issue, but it's a possible one. I'm just a user, so it is not a significan impact on me, but that is my personal feeling.
