I've been using E since before that 'start kde' option was, but never got
problems with K apps. Try E's own startup, you can add akonaditray and some
other k daemon to start in there.

When you start adding apps in e's startup, if you can't find what you need,
try looking for the .desktop and placing them in ~/.local/share/applications
