If you comment out the config args: own_window_type own_window_transparent ... it should start. At least this has worked for me with most of the example cfg files I've seen. Unfortunately commenting out own_window_transparent also gives you a black background, whereas many examples have nicely coloured patterns etc with this arg set. I believe the problem is that conky wants to render directly to the root window, but E also wants to do this.
