So, I copied my config file and the same e16 install to my desktop workation
(went from ati firegl 5200 to Nvidia NV43) and all the problems went away
(it was another ubuntu hardy install with the same libs).
So, it's unlikely that E is at fault and I think there is something not
quite working/optimized in the ati fglrx driver.
Thanks for looking into this, but at this point I think my X server is to
blame :(
