Agreed.  My .xsession starts up gnome-volume-manager and 
gnome-settings-manager so I can take advantage of a lot of the gnome
config I'd done in the time since I last switch from E.

entropy is a file manager that uses the E libraries.  It's in the
proto directory of E17.  It has an associations menu, and it looks
like they come from mime types that are defined somewhere, similar to
the way Mozilla handles things.
