Do you use yum or apt? Didier has a good yum repository for e17 that I use and it's the cat's meow. Go to http://sps.nus.edu.sg/~didierbe/ for a full explanation, the packages on his repository are updated at least once a week, so you're not often with a fickle version, and if you are, it's not for long.
