even more weird... it happened again, but this time there were no
dialogs on my desktop and I was simply opening emacs from inside
thunderbird.
I moved to a console and saw that E was still alive but it was
eating up all the cpu... I don't know if gdb could be useful in this
case, if so can you tell me what gdb command should I run?

I updated my cvs tree, and thus build E and all the EFL, 3 days ago.
