unlikely that it's dropshadow. maybe monitor - but not dropshadow. all the
defaults here and e doesnt leak etc. etc. etc.

I also noticed this. Disabling dropshadows did speed it up a little
(of course it did, my computer now has less to do. :)), but left
monitor running. I then switched this: monitor off, dropshadows on,
and it's much smoother.
