Hello Jean

This is happening with every user guide file I work on. However, since I have updated to the latest version of LO, the problem appears to be worse.

Where do I go to submit a bug report?

This tells you how:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport

You really begin here:

I tried a quick search for the problem

https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/buglist.cgi?query_format=specific&order=relevance%20desc&bug_status=__open__&product=LibreOffice&content=cross%20reference&list_id=304346

Might be related to this:

I am testing this on different operating systems, because I normally use my iMac to do the user guides. When I have tested the same file under Windows and Ubuntu I can submit the bug report.

I know I have mentioned this before, but someone has to seriously look at the
automatic numbering and cross referencing system used in LibreOffice.

I am now back at my desk after a few problems to sort out after a lovely
holiday, that did include computers.

I am using the latest version of LO to continue with the Impress Guide, but
automatic numbering and cross referencing is giving me problems.

Each time I insert a new frame for a figure or move a frame to a new
position, the automatic numbering goes out of sequence. For example, the figure number goes from Figure 16 to Figure 3. The fix is to run the update tool and save. However, add or move another frame and exactly the same thing
happens.

Each time I move a paragraph that includes a cross reference to a frame to a new position or delete a paragraph before or after the paragraph containing a cross reference, then the cross reference indicates a figure number after the original frame, for example instead of Figure 16 I get Figure 17. Again the fix is to run the update tool and save, but again each time there is an
paragraph edit change, the same thing happens.

This problem reflects badly on LibreOffice, so any advice on how to solve
the problem would be appreciated.

Sounds like a bug report would be in order. I've noticed similar problems, but only in some files. I've not kept notes in which files and circumstances, though I should have. I keep intending to check whether the problems occur on Windows and Linux as well as my Mac, but haven't got around to it.

I've also been seeing some strange problems related to styles. Marc Pare from Marketing and I were talking about this recently. No, I don't have the energy right now to summarise what's occurred.
