SmartOS aims to be a good hypervisor, but it also aims to be a good server by performing the roles of a traditional server is a slightly different fashion. In the later instance, SmartOS promotes the deployment of individual services in their own minimal install Smart Machines (zones). Doing this provides an extra layer of security and stability over deploying all services in a single user space. If something nasty happens to a service in SmartOS, it is very easy and quick (minutes) to nuke the zone and re-provision a fresh instance of the zone with the service in question. Running a single service in a zone also allows you to do some experimenting on a production machine without the risk of taking down other vital services. Once you get used to running services this way (i.e., in zones), it is hard to go back to the traditional type of deployment.
