No, I definitely do not agree with that statement.  Confirmed identity
is the foundation of many benefits.  Reputation is only one of them.

I imagine that you know your use of the term "self sign" is rather
different from the common definition of that term as used in PKI,
where it is often pejorative.  Let me suggest that you drop the term
"self" from that description.  Hopefully we will all encourage senders
to sign their messages.
