It would be nice, but difficult. Without consistency in how the thumbnails are used, and without a very compelling user benefit, sites aren't likely to invest in keeping up-to-date copies of their thumbnails available. We certainly can't rely on it in the short term, and I'm skeptical that it's feasible in the long term (even just getting standardized higher-resolution favicons has proven to be difficult).
