It's starting to sound like Mutter just wasn't very good at handling
failed hardware cursor updates in 24.04. Indeed I cannot reproduce it in
25.04 either (I haven't tried 24.04 yet). Such a problem could be
specific to Wayland AND affect Xorg sessions still because it might be
the login screen (always Wayland) causing the main freeze.

Bug description:
I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 22.04 to Ubuntu 24.04. Now whenever I
log in, sometimes I'll get a blank screen. It will only show the mouse
cursor as an X.
The problem seems to be intermittent. So far it's only happened to me
using X11.
My current workaround:
1. Open another terminal (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F6)
2. Restart gdm3 (sudo systemctl restart gdm3)
This seems to be affecting many people, although I couldn't find an
existing bug: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1514757/issue-with-
