For what it's worth the bug is repeatable 100% of the time. just start moving the mouse when logging in and keep moving it for 10 seconds or so, long enough so that it's obvious that the Gnome screen doesn't show. Now whenever I log in, sometimes I'll get a blank screen. It will only show the mouse cursor as an X. The problem seems to be intermittent. So far it's only happened to me using X11.
