You are right : the do-release-upgrade froze at some point. Black screen. I can't remember if I Ctrl+Alt+PrtScrREISUB out of it or if I had to hard shut down the computer. Ubuntu would not start after that, so I had to "repair packages" from some boot menu. It took quite a while and after that all was working fine except for that Settings screen.
