New maintainer or not, it needs someone to pay attention to it (as it is an important package, no?). I was unaware that Juan had recently come out of hibernation. Juan, are you interested in the changes to the package I have already made? I migrated the build to debhelper, and have debconf almost setup to do the prompting for incompatible version stuff.
