Or seeing as this is a debian system, you could use the menus package
and debian's update-menus script. You just need to create a file for
each menu item in ~/.menu and run update-menus to add the item

example item: rdesktop menu entry
?package(bash):needs="X11" section="Apps/Net"  title="rdesktop" 
command="/home/steve/bin/rdesktop"
