No, you're right, though I don't need your sympathy. I don't want anything because Debian Stable works out of the box (on this old machine) without a hitch, and for that, kudos to the team. I have enough experience and the netinstall iso works like a charm. So there's that. But it's just the cognitive dissidence between a distro whose default desktop is Gnome and whose most knowledgable users wouldn't touch Gnome with a ten-foot pole. Yet I wouldn't, either (that resource hog). In fact, all I really need is a "tool bar?" (or whatever it's called) at the bottom of the screen to easily launch the few apps I use. And tex-live. And I'm afraid to admit network manager. All the rest of LXDE, the categorized menus of applications, I never use and find pretty much unusable. But let's face it. I ain't much of hacker.
