I had this problem for a while.

As long as the system was actually running (ssh to it from another
machine) I could get it back using Alt-Ctrl-F12 Alt-Ctrl-F2, which gave
me what looked like a login screen, but was actually just an "unlock"
screen.

Sometimes the system had completely halted: I run gkrellm, and when the
graphs stop moving, I knew it was hung. And I couldn't ssh to it. I had
to reboot after those hangups.

I don't know whether it was Firefox or KDE or Wayland or a hardware
problem. My computer lives in a little cupboard under my desk. I run
with the door open now and it doesn't happen anymore. Maybe it was a
thermal thing in the video card. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a thermal
thing on the CPU because the temperature shown by gkrellm was below
40°C
