Try pressing: Ctrl-Alt-F1 -- that should show you a login prompt. Login and run
some diagnostics.

You can even press Ctrl-Alt-F1 before you run firefox, start some diagnostics
then return to graphical mode with Ctrl-Alt-F7. Then when the system locks up
press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to see the diagnostics running.

This will not work if the system is truely borked, but often it is not but you
cannot get to run a new command.

Another way of doing this is to ssh into the machine from elsewhere and run
diagnostics from there.

What diagnostics ... I would start with the top (or atop) programs.
