For 1000BASE-T I would be very surprised if that was the case as it uses all four pairs and has Auto-MDI/MDIX is built in to the standard.

Off Topic I just did a 1 year diploma in advanced networking. I couldn't even comprehend why the still had crossover cables in the lab. Perhaps to accommodate pre-2000 CISCO switches?
