I had a similar problem when I upgraded my kernel. The problem I had was that the module for my network card wasen't packaged with the stock "kernel-iamge-2.4.18" series. Try the "kernel-image-2.4.18-bf2.4" package (and comment out the initrd=/initrd.img line as I think it's not needed in this version.) It has support for a lot of network cards and reiserfs.
