I have to agree there.  I have installed probably a dozen new Debian boxes
(a few Woody and moslty Sid) in the last month or so.  I have found that,
without a doubt, the best way to do this (especially when you are not sure
what hardware you have) is to boot Knoppix and use it to do a chroot install
to the harddrive.  That way you can Google, use lspci, and have plenty of time
and tools to poke around the machine and get the configuration perfect before
you go and boot it on its own.
