The full details of the incident is not given there. Like the terms of
warranty. This is one area where you have to read the fine print before
purchasing.
Considering all the MS hate posts in the comments of that article this
might even be a MS hate article to begin with.

However I'd like to point out that I use a Compaq (HP) laptop that came
with freedos (HP does sell laptops with freedos for cheaper than with
windows prices) and I use linux on this box and during the 1 year
warranty time the CD Rom got busted (it wont close) and I took it to HP
and they replaced it within 15 minutes. All they did was to check the
serial number before replacing the unit. They didnt bother about the OS
I had.

On a separate point I'd like to point out that both HP and Acer sells
laptops with Freedos and Linux (respectively) installed at cheaper
pricers in this part of the world.
