"/dev/mouse" isn't created by default, it's usually a symlink to the
actual mouse device file.  In your case you can:

  - Create the link:  ln -s /dev/psaux /dev/mouse
  - Change the "Device" line in /etc/X11/XF86Config to point to
    /dev/psaux.

It is religion.  Some belief systems coexist with reality somewhat
better than others.  The ultimate test is what works for you.  And don't
be afraid to experiment and change things over time.
