The resolution you want to start with should be the first one on the line.
Also make sure that you're editing the right line - there are many mode lines
for different bit depths.  There are also different sections for different X
servers (if you're using XFree86 3.x - anyone know if XFree86 4 is in potato
yet?)

Check that your video card has enough memory for the resolution you want, and
make sure that X knows how much memory you have.

Ctrl-Alt-<Keypad +> and Ctrl-Alt-<Keypad ->  Another useful key combo is
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace which kills the X server.

You probably have xdm started automatically.  Switch to a console terminal
(Ctrl-Alt-F1 should do), log in, and run "/etc/init.d/xdm stop" as root.
