In 'Section "Screen"' put a line of:

    DefaultDepth [4|8|15|16|24]

(Only chose one number, of course)

Use numpad keys for + and -

<Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Backspace>  may kill X, but it may respawn too.  Depends
on configuration.
