Well, one logical thing to test - try "route -n" You should see line like 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 ............ eth0 If it exists then I can't see any logical errors and I think the problem is in NIC may be You can change cards between computers and see if linux card will work in PC and vise verse.
