Ok, yes, that did work, and I see the same effect with virtualbox and
the older Qt.

So what we really have here is, virtualbox's virtual-machine windows
somehow corrupt X server state in a way that makes Qt applications
started after that point display incorrectly, until the server is
restarted.  This sounds like both a virtualbox bug (it shouldn't do
that) and a Qt bug (it should be able to cope with applications doing
arbitrary weird shit to the X server).
