I'm surprised that you don't know about the nice contributors.d.o website.

I tend to miss such things. Maybe I'm reading the mailing lists too superficially. I was equally surprised when puiparts came up, or debtags (which I never supplied data too since I was kind of expecting lintian to complain when it became important enouth).

The importance of it is that it is used e.g. for
- new DM/DD applicants
- DebConf bursary requests
(probably more)

Baiscally it's an attempt to summarize "What has this person contributed to Debian?"

Then it should definetely also search for acknowledgements in commit _messages_ and changelog entries.
