I'd vote for 1 or
1a. create a stripped down version for i386, i.e. required/important
and go for i486.
The reasoning is simple: Market share. i386 was never that popular as
i486 for the simple reason that machines were quite expensive and
that i286 was still available (and fast enough for many purposes).
