Debian also already accepted this from the NEW queue (because a new soname ->
new libpackage name) into 'unstable' and several arches have already built it.

Yes, while it looks a little ugly it really is the only proper way to deal
with it.  Which also means that I was wrong in not updating the soname at our
end at my first build, but many of my peers reminded me of that in no
uncertain terms.
