Executive summary:

  i)  2.2.0a looks good,
  ii) it fixes our issue as it comes up 'libprotobuf5' etc

Longer version:

Ok, I had some time left and prepared 2.2.0a-0.1 for Debian to fill in for
Iustin:

protobuf (2.2.0a-0.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Non-maintainer upload
  * New upstream release made this evening correction major SONAME
  * debian/control: Updated major version to 5          (Closes: #556563)
  * debian/rules: Updated two links to use libproto*5
  * debian/libprotobuf5.shlibs: Added

Passes all of 'make check', builds clean, passes our lintian checker (modulo
one warning) and runs our package. I'll upload this to Debian now, so feel
free to release this to the world at large.

Two issues remain for Iustin or whoever wants to adopt it: split off the
-lite library and headers, and fix the one harmless lintian warning.

Dirk, who how has libprotobuf[2345] on his system
