Maybe that is a clue: My system is testing. So perhaps the
latest moc update depends on an update of some other component
that has not yet found its way to testing? (I have experienced
such cases before: Broken systems, because some essential
package(s) had been retained in sid).

I did the following:
  -> stopping X completely
  -> renaming ~/.moc to ~/.moc-out-of-use
  -> running mocp with the name of a directory full of mp3 files
     as argument.

I suppose that the default behaviour is "AutoNext"; so this time
the result after pressing <ENTER> was the following:
It tried some seconds to play the first file, gave up, jumped to
the next one, tried for some seconds and so forth until the last
file. Then it stopped. No sound. So it was not X's fault.

If nothing else comes to mind I propose just waiting until next
week and trying again after my next update next Tuesday. One
day my system will contain all the "worthy" packages from the
actual sid, and maybe the bug will get resolved without any
intervention. I'll try from time to time and give notice when
there is any change (or definitely not). As a matter of fact,
it's not _really_ urgent.

  Thanks for looking into the problem!
      Petra
