I checked the files in your kernel package (since it is a pre-packaged
kernel) and found these modules:

lib/modules/2.6.8-2-686/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-centrino.ko
base/kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686
lib/modules/2.6.8-2-686/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-ich.ko
base/kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686
lib/modules/2.6.8-2-686/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-lib.ko
base/kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686
lib/modules/2.6.8-2-686/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-smi.ko
base/kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686

I am guessing that the machine is not a centrino. On my system I have
the other three compiled in statically. If you could try loading them
(maybe by including them in /etc/modules) and see if you can reproduce
the behavior, I would appreciate it. Also, if you load them I would
like to see the messages output to the console when they are loaded. If
you have them loaded at boot, the output of dmesg from immediately after
boot would suffice.
