That is according to the intended behaviour, as far as I know.  Where
did you get the idea that /etc/default/sssd would work?  What kind of
options do you want to set that can't be set in /etc/sssd/sssd.conf?

I'm not against adding support for /etc/default/sssd, but need some
rationale.
