regenerating xorg.conf helped. thx for the tip.

Thanks to both of you for further investigations of the problem.
Now it would be quite nice to know, which options exactly generate this
problems, so we could document it!

Could you both send us your old (not working) and the new generated
xorg.conf?

FWIW Patrick, I don't know if aticonfig only touches xorg.conf or if
it also touches some ati-specific files...
If it's a matter of xorg.conf, it seems to be either DPMS or a
required display subsection.

In any case, here are the old one and the new one.

I think it is this change:

        DefaultDepth 24
+ SubSection "Display"
+ Viewport 0 0
+ Depth 24
+ EndSubSection

DefaultDepth already has to be defined in every fglrx release, without it, X wont start. Could someone verify it with his old configuration and just adding the subsection, that it is working then?

Another possible change would be:
+ Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0

Or yes the dpms thing, if AMD changed the DPMS handling:
+ Option "DPMS" "true"
