I am running snd-hda-itel on a tp t61p. What the hell is an ugly beep? For me it is just a beep.... Well the beep can be controlled by the Beep mixer control. AFAIK the frequency of the beep doesn't vary. There is a kernelmodul which can be enabled by commenting blacklist snd-pcsp to # blacklist snd-pcsp in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base-blacklist.conf Please don*t ask how this works ;-) AFAIK it uses the internal PC speaker.
