Until recently I was using the AMD64 archive and proceeded to install
sl-modem-daemon from upstream's source, as Debian doesn't have this package on
that architecture. Back then it seemed to work nicely with my VIA82XX modem
through ALSA. Now I'm back on i386 and after installing this package I just get
an error message saying that module snd_intel8x0m cannot be found; that's
certainly not the driver that corresponds to my modem.

I based my old init.d script in Debian's, but I just changed all module
occurences from intel to VIA, and that seems to be enough. Perhaps for Debian
both have to be tried in turn?
